A Multimedia Exploration of the Story of Vulcan, Blending Film, Poetry, Sound, Music, Art and Science
Welcome to Cradle of Fire, a multimedia collaborative exploration, inspired by Vulcan. Our mythical muse’s story is the catalyst for diverse themes in our initiative. Cradle of Fire was born on 27 May 2024 thanks to an Arts Council England grant.
At the heart of our project, which is in the development phase, and seeking more partners and contributors, is a short film, which was launched at Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield on 7 November 2024. A second screening took place at Land of Iron Museum, Skinningrove, on 14 November and a third in Cambridge.
The film weaves poetry, sound and multi-media art to tell the story of the Roman god Vulcan, craftsman/blacksmith and the deity of fire, forges and volcanoes. Geology, engineering and earth-sciences are also embedded in this re-imagining of the steel and mining industries.

Back in May 2024, when the Cradle of Fire project first started, most of the team headed up to Sheffield, to do some recording with musicologist and composer Kim Cunio.
