A Multimedia Exploration of the Story of Vulcan, Blending Film, Poetry, Sound, Music, Art and Science
Professor Kim Cunio, outgoing Head of the School of Music (2019-2023) at the Australian National University (ANU), and incoming Head of the New Zealand School of Music (2024-), is a composer, performer and researcher interested in old and new music and the role of music has in making sense of our larger world.
Known as one of Australia’s most adventurous composers, Kim is interested in transforming himself and others through artistic practice, especially through a process of listening to the outdoors and writing music in response to that experience.
Kim is a Grammy Long listed composer and recipient of the ABC Golden Manuscript Award. His compositions have been played at the White House, UN, and concerts/festivals in many countries. Commissioning organisations include the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne International Arts Festival, and the Foundation for Universal Sacred Music (USA).
Kim writes for the Deans and Directors of the Creative Arts, the Crawford Centre for Public Policy and has a regular segment on ABC Radio in Australia to discuss music and the larger world. He hosted a daily half hour TV show on Indian television for the Awakening Channel.
As the Sounds of Space Project, Kim has created albums setting the ‘sounds of space’ with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in collaboration with space weather scientist Dr Nigel Meredith and Diana Scarborough.
