A Multimedia Exploration of the Story of Vulcan, Blending Film, Poetry, Sound, Music, Art and Science

Partnering with museums and other heritage, cultural and educational organisations, the Cradle of Fire team explores fresh ways to engage with new and diverse audiences.

We are keen to work with new partners, so whether you are a community group, potential industry partner, active in education, or with a charity or local community, we would be interested to hear from you. We also want to share our project outcomes with a range of audiences, in order to assess impact and engagement when using a multimedia palette for storytelling. Would music and film with live performance offer a fresh way of telling steelmaking, mining or other historic craft stories, past and present, work for you?

If your organisation would like to work with us, please contact us – we’d be delighted to discuss possibilities.

These are our current collaborative partners:

Kelham Island Museum
Kelham Island Museum on the river Don – the heart of Sheffield’s steel industry – explores 300 years of steelmaking in the city from master craftsmen to mass industrial production. The star exhibit is the mighty River Don Engine – a 425 ton working steam engine whose earth-shaking rumble will be featured in Cradle of Fire.

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a rural industrial site dating back to the 1700s. Powered by water from the river Sheaf, which gives Sheffield its name, and using crucible furnaces, scythes and steel were made. Sites, sounds and tools from Abbeydale will appear in the Cradle of Fire film and its soundtrack.

Land of Iron
The Land of Iron museum stands on the site of the first ironstone mine in Cleveland, which opened 150 years ago after ironstone was discovered on Skinningrove beach. The area went on to supply a third of the world’s iron and steel.
