A Multimedia Exploration of the Story of Vulcan, Blending Film, Poetry, Sound, Music, Art and Science

Recording Poems in a Sheffield Airbnb

During our first team research visit to Sheffield, Carolyn shared her Vulcan inspired poems with Kim, Heather and I. Our composer Kim and soprano Heather are from Australia but worked with us as part of a working visit in the UK. They had never been to Sheffield before, nor met Carolyn in person, so a special time for all of us. Kim travels with a professional hardware/software for sound production and, after a long but exciting day at the museums and a cup of tea, tempted Carolyn to record her poems. It was very ad hoc – no rehearsal or prep time, but Kim and Carolyn were pleased with the results. They will form the narrative of our Cradle of Fire short film and can be seen as works-in-progress. The image below shows Kim setting up his ‘studio’ for us to hear how it sounds as the final product. The striking yellow background is in our Airbnb studio apartment at Kelham Island where the recording and editing took place.
